How to Become an Electrician in Alberta
Electrician is a compulsory-certification trade in Alberta. People doing the trade’s restricted work generally must be registered apprentices, certified journeypersons, or otherwise authorized under Alberta’s apprenticeship and trade-certification rules.
Requirements below are current as of September 2026, based on Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) and Alberta Tradesecrets.
Alberta Electrician snapshot
- 4 periods, about one year each
- 7,200 hours total apprenticeship
- 6,120 hours on-the-job training · 1,080 hours classroom
- 2 certificates: Construction Electrician + Industrial Electrician, plus an Advanced Diploma
- Red Seal: optional, for one or both branches
New since May 1, 2026: two journeyperson certificates
Alberta changed how electricians are certified. If you complete Alberta’s electrician apprenticeship on or after May 1, 2026, you receive a Construction Electrician certificate, an Industrial Electrician certificate, and one Advanced Diploma. You do not complete a separate industrial apprenticeship — the curriculum is the same.
| Construction Electrician | Industrial Electrician |
|---|---|
| Residential, commercial, institutional and other construction-related electrical work | Electrical systems and equipment in industrial settings such as manufacturing and processing facilities |
Electricians certified before May 1, 2026 hold a Construction Electrician certificate. AIT allows previously certified journeypersons to apply for a document replacement if they want both.
The Alberta pathway at a glance
Route A — Employer first
Find a sponsoring employer → register as an apprentice with AIT → work and log on-the-job hours → attend technical training one period at a time → pass each period exam → journeyperson certificate.
Route B — Pre-employment program first
Complete a recognized college pre-employment program → apply for Prior Learning Assessment credit toward Period 1 classroom → find a sponsor → register with AIT → continue the apprenticeship.
Route C — Union pathway
Apply through IBEW Local 424 / EITCA → union places you with a signatory contractor → union manages classroom scheduling → same AIT apprenticeship hours and journeyperson certificate.
Not every “electrical program” makes you a journeyperson. Colleges offer pre-employment certificates and diplomas that teach electrical fundamentals, but only the registered apprenticeship leads to journeyperson certification. Every listing in our directory is labelled as pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, college certificate, or union pathway so you can tell the difference.
Step 4: Complete the four-period apprenticeship
Each period is designed to take about a year and combines on-the-job training with classroom training at an AIT-recognized school.
| Period | OJT hours | Classroom | Weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Period 1 | 1,560 | 240 | 8 |
| Period 2 | 1,560 | 240 | 8 |
| Period 3 | 1,560 | 240 | 10 |
| Period 4 | 1,560 | 240 | 10 |
| Total | 6,120 | 1,080 | 36 |
