Courses, colleges and apprenticeship programs across Manitoba
Electrician schools in Manitoba all feed one destination: the four-level, 7,200-hour apprenticeship overseen by Apprenticeship Manitoba, ending in a Red Seal Certificate of Qualification — and then one extra step unique to Manitoba. In Manitoba, Construction Electrician is a compulsory-certification Red Seal trade: people entering generally must register as apprentices, and certified journeypersons must hold the province’s electrician’s licence. What differs between schools is how you enter that apprenticeship.
There are three routes in: find an employer sponsor and register directly as an apprentice, take a pre-employment program first (which may earn Level 1 credit when Apprenticeship Manitoba’s requirements are met), or go through the IBEW Local 2085 union pathway. The directory below lets you filter providers by route using the Pathway chip.
Manitoba’s directory lists the colleges and institutes that deliver electrician technical training, plus the union training centre — so you can compare where the in-school portion happens before you commit.

The Manitoba electrician apprenticeship — what Apprenticeship Manitoba requires
Construction Electrician is a compulsory-certification, Red Seal trade in Manitoba, administered by Apprenticeship Manitoba. Here’s the standard:
Manitoba apprenticeship at a glance
- Structure — 4 levels, one per year
- Total apprenticeship — 7,200 hours (1,800 h per level, on-the-job + technical combined)
- Technical training — 10 weeks per level (40 weeks total) at a recognized college
- Common core — Levels 1–2 shared across Construction, Industrial & Power Electrician; specialize at Level 3
- Tuition — ≈$580 per level to the apprentice; Manitoba covers the rest (≈$4,200/level)
- Credential — Red Seal Certificate of Qualification, then the ITS HC Journeyperson Electrician Licence to practise
- Entrance — Set by the delivery college (typically Grade 12 English + Grade 11 Math)
⚠ Important — Manitoba has an extra licence step
Your Red Seal Certificate of Qualification is your trade credential — but to work as a licensed journeyperson in Manitoba you must also hold the HC Licence from Inspection and Technical Services (ITS). And getting hired is not the same as being registered as an apprentice: in a compulsory trade, register promptly, or qualifying hours may not be recognized.
Three ways into the Manitoba apprenticeship
Your destination is the same Apprenticeship Manitoba program, the same Certificate of Qualification, and the same HC Licence. These are the three ways people get into it — filter the directory by Pathway to match:
The core
Apprenticeship
Find a sponsoring electrical contractor and register with Apprenticeship Manitoba. Four levels of paid on-the-job work (1,800 h/level) paired with 10-week technical blocks at RRC Polytech, Assiniboine or UCN (Levels 1–2).
Head start
Pre-employment
A college certificate that can earn Level 1 credit when Apprenticeship Manitoba’s requirements are met — a foundation before you’ve found a sponsor. Offered at RRC Polytech, Assiniboine and some high-school programs.
Union
IBEW 2085
IBEW Local 2085’s training centre runs a Construction Electrician pre-employment program in Winnipeg leading to Level 1 credit and a path into the union’s signatory-contractor network.
Whichever route you take, you complete the same four levels and the same Red Seal exam, then apply to ITS for the HC Licence.

How to become a licensed electrician in Manitoba
- Check the entrance requirements. There’s no single Apprenticeship Manitoba academic prerequisite; delivery colleges typically expect Grade 12 English and Grade 11 Math, plus the physical ability to do trade work.
- Find a sponsor, then register with Apprenticeship Manitoba. A sponsoring electrical contractor employs you, records your hours and schedules your technical training. Register promptly — getting hired isn’t the same as being registered.
- Get into the trade via one of the three routes: sign directly with a sponsor, take a pre-employment program (possible Level 1 credit), or enter through IBEW Local 2085.
- Complete the four levels — 7,200 hours. 1,800 hours per level of on-the-job work plus a 10-week technical-training block each level (40 weeks total).
- Write the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam and receive your Certificate of Qualification with Red Seal endorsement.
- Apply to ITS for the HC Licence. This is the step unique to Manitoba — the HC Journeyperson Electrician Licence from Inspection and Technical Services is what lets you practise as a licensed journeyperson.
Each level is designed to take about a year — roughly four years if you work continuously. Later, two years as a licensed journeyperson plus the ITS Master Electrician exam opens the design/layout responsibility needed to run an electrical contracting business.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is electrician a compulsory trade in Manitoba?
Yes. Construction Electrician is a compulsory-certification Red Seal trade: people entering the trade generally must register as apprentices, and certified journeypersons must hold the appropriate electrician’s licence. Specific supervision exemptions apply.
How long does it take to become an electrician in Manitoba?
Four levels of about a year each — roughly four years — totalling 7,200 hours (1,800 h per level), with a 10-week technical-training block each level, then the Red Seal exam and the HC Licence.
What’s the difference between the Certificate of Qualification and the HC Licence?
The C. of Q. is your trade credential from Apprenticeship Manitoba (you passed the Red Seal exam). The HC Licence is your practising licence from Inspection and Technical Services — what lets you work as a licensed journeyperson in Manitoba. You need both.
Do I need a sponsor to start?
Yes, to accumulate recognized on-the-job hours. A pre-employment program or IBEW Local 2085 can help you connect with one. Register as an apprentice promptly — getting hired isn’t the same as being registered.
What’s the difference between a college program and an apprenticeship?
A pre-employment certificate teaches fundamentals and may earn Level 1 credit, but it doesn’t by itself make you a journeyperson. Only the registered Apprenticeship Manitoba program, the Red Seal exam and the HC Licence do.
How much does technical training cost?
Apprentices pay about $580 per level; Manitoba covers the balance — roughly $4,200 per level on average.
Can I get certified without an apprenticeship?
Possibly, through Apprenticeship Manitoba’s Trade Qualifier pathway for experienced workers. Construction Electrician currently requires about 10,800 hours (~six years) of qualifying experience plus the required application and declarations.
How much do electricians earn in Manitoba?
Job Bank puts the median at about $35/hr (range $17.15–$46.00, NOC 72200). Pay varies by employer, region, sector and union status.
